Top 10 Teams With Most Wins In World Cup Matches

1975 hosted the first ever ICC World Cup which was won by Windies beating Australia. The Caribbeans continued their dominance winning the next tournament in 1979 before Indian National Cricket Team halted their run beating them in the finals in 1983. Australia won the next while Pakistan and Sri Lanka shared the next two tournaments.

Meanwhile, Australia’s dominance in world cricket began in 199 when they won three consecutive trophies before India won it again in 2011 beating Sri Lanka at home. However, the Aussies came back four years later to win at their home taking the tally to the five World Cup titles.

As the 12the edition of the ICC World Cup embarks in a week time,  let us take a look at the top ten teams with most wins in World Cup:

10. ZIMBABWE

Zimbabwe will not be a part of the upcoming World Cup as they failed to progress from the qualifying tournament. Afghanistan and Windies were the two teams to come up and join the rest eight for the main event.

Zimbabweans have so far taken part in nine World Cups winning only 11 matches in total. They have lost 42 off the 57 games they have played – the least among the first ten teams in the list of matches won in World Cup.

9. BANGLADESH

Bangladesh have named a relatively experienced squad for the showpiece event in England and Wales. The likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal, and skipper Mashrafe Mortaza will be key to their success.

This will be Bangladesh’s sixth World Cup campaign, and they will look to cause some upsets when they South Africa in their first game on June 2. However, so far, the Tigers have managed to win only 13 matches out of 37 they have played and will be desperate to improve their record.

8. SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka is going through a transition, and a new skipper in Dimuth Karunaratne will lead the team in the upcoming marquee event. Karunaratne has not played an ODI game since the last World Cup and only time will say how to reacts to the added responsibility.

The Islanders who won the 1996 World Cup have 37 victories to their names in 77 matches they have played. Despite having a young team, Sri Lanka will look to give a tough fight to the opponents.

7. SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa started playing the World Cup from 1992 edition of the tournament, post apartheid. They are the unluckiest team in the history of cricket as they have failed to put a hand on the trophy after coming very close.

Meanwhile, the Proteas are a consistent team as they have the second-best winning percentage after Australia. They have won 36 matches and lost in the 61 games they have played so far in this competition. South Africa have a quality bowling attack and will rely on them to win their first trophy.

6. PAKISTAN

Pakistan have made three changes to their preliminary squad and strengthened their pace attack. However, they need to pull their socks up quickly after going down against England 4-0 just before the World Cup.

So far, Pakistan have won 41 matches in the history of the tournament and will have to play good cricket to improve their statistics. Sarfraz Ahmed & Co will have to come out stronger in the next matches to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.

5. WINDIES

Windies progressed to the 12th edition of the ICC World Cup playing the Qualifiers. However, they have shown good form in recent games, and with Chris Gayle and Andre Russell on song, the Caribbeans can give a tough time to all the oppositions.

However, when compared to previous teams, this Windies side stand nowhere close to that. The quality of players have gone down, and the management have failed to create a pool of players. Windies won the first two editions of the tournament and have won 42 of the 77 games they have played in the quadrennial competition. As a result, they find themselves in fifth place in the list of most matches win in World Cup.

4. ENGLAND

England have participated in all the World Cups so far; however, is yet to lift the trophy. Meanwhile, this time around, they enter the tournament as the top-ranked ODI side and look in line to win the title. Last time, they bowed out of the competition from the group stages.

The Three Lions; meanwhile, don’t have a good record in the World Cups as they have lost 31 out of 78 games and winning 45 of it.

3. INDIA

Indian National Cricket Team will enter the 12th edition of the ICC World Cup as one of the top contenders. The team under the leadership of Virat Kohli will look to bring the third trophy home.

So far, India have emerged victorious in 1983 and 2011 editions of the tournament under Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni respectively. They have played 79 games in the major competition and won 50 of those games. Moreover, their winning rate is the third best after Australia and South Africa.

2. NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand is one of the most consistent sides in the history of cricket. The Kiwis likes to stay away from all the media attention and focus on doing their job.

Although they are yet to win a World Cup, the Black Caps have a good winning rate in the tournaments. They have won 52 matches out of 84 games – the second best among all the teams. Although they are not the favourites, but this NewZealand side have the potential to surprise the other teams.

Australia is the most successful team in the history of the World Cup. They have won the title five times in 11 editions – the most by any teams.

They have played 90 World Cup matches in total winning 67 of them. They also have the highest winning rate among all the teams. The Aussies have named a strong squad and will look to defend the title in the upcoming marquee event in the England and Wales.
