New Zealand have named a full-strength squad for the ODI series against Australia that will take place across the Tasman sea, commencing from the 13th of March. The likes of Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, and Matt Henry, who missed the convincing series win against India at home, have made it to the squad. The return of their key bowlers gives them the hope of securing their first ODI series victory in Australia.
All three were part of the squad that suffered a Test series defeat down under recently, but went injured. The trio have slowly resumed their road back to the national side. While Henry and Ferguson have only played first-class cricket and two domestic 50-over matches, Boult took part in the Test series that thrashed India. Kyle Jamieson retains his spot while Hamish Bennett and Scott Kuggelieijn couldn’t make the cut.
Head coach Gary Stead claimed that playing Australia on their home turf is one of the biggest challenges. However, they are looking forward to it and would take confidence in the manner they beat India. The coach further expressed his delightfulness in welcoming the pace trio and conceded that Jamieson would play a significant part in Australia.
“Playing Australia in Australia is one of the great challenges in world cricket and you know you will be severely tested in all aspects of the game. Our one-day unit is a pretty settled one with plenty of experience and I think that showed in the recent series against India.” Stead said as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.
“It’s great to welcome back the class of Trent, Matt and Lockie who spearheaded our run to the Cricket World Cup final last year. Kyle’s made every post a winner since his international debut this season and he’ll be a handy asset to have in Australia. It’s an honour to compete for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy and I know it means a lot to the players to have the trophy stay in New Zealand.” he added further.
New Zealand are the current holders of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, having regained it in early 2017. The men in yellow have the most titles with five wins under their belt. The first two ODIs woud take place in Sydney on 13th and 15th of March respectively before moving on to Hobart for the third on the 20th.
