India skipper Mithali Raj will like to use the upcoming Twenty20 Tri-series as a platform to prepare for the ICC Women’s World T20, later this year in Windies. The Tri-nation series will also include the hosts Australia and England. Meanwhile, the Southern Stars recently thrashed India 3-0 in the ODI series at Baroda.

Mithali admitted that Australia will be the toughest opponents in the tri-series that begin on Thursday (March 22).

Meanwhile, promising Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the side and Smriti Mandhana will be her deputy.

We are looking at World T20:

The face of women’s cricket in India, Mithali wanted to look at a bigger picture and cited this series on the basis of the preparatory ground.

We are looking at the bigger picture that is World T20. We want to get our combination right and give enough opportunity to every player in this tournament,” said Mithali.

After a brilliant display of cricket in the Rainbow Nation winning both the ODI and T20I series, India’s dismal show against Australia at home came as a big disappointment. Mithali cited lack of partnership and the bowler’s indisciplined line and length as the reason.

India needs to invest in young players:

Mithali further hailed BCCI’s contract as a great decision. She also added it may take a year or two to get the second string ready.

Players need to invest more, keep fitness level high and are expected to be professional on the ground and perform their best. With contract system, every cricketer can aim to play for India,” Mithali added.

Talking about women’s IPL, Mithali Raj feels it is important to have a pool of players.

It is important to have a pool of players. If we have some quality domestic players then it will be wise to have women’s IPL. It may take a year or two to have the second string team ready,” Mithali concluded.
