Trolled For Her Dressing, Mithali Raj Hits Back In Style

After not responding to the online trolls on the social media, India women team’s skipper Mithali Raj has come down heavily on her detractors. Despite being one of the most sought after cricketers in the world, even Mithali was not spared by some on the social media when she posted a couple of pictures on Twitter last month. The first picture showed her sweaty armpit while the second one was the one in which she was wearing a western dress.

The pictures were enough for some to forget Mithali’s on-field exploits as they body-shamed her and passed some under the table comments. But just like the way, she has remained on the top of the opposition on a cricket field, the 33-year old came on top in this unfortunate incident too.

She not only criticised those who passed inappropriate comments but also thanked those who came out in her support.

“Sometimes I feel people have way too much time in their lives that they do this (troll) and they only try to figure out the negativity in the people and post it. For all those strong people who have come out in support of me I would like to thank them and also tell women should not be discouraged by these trolls as it is definitely not worth our time,” she told India Today.

“Social media is a medium in which people can reach out to anybody. Everybody has the rights to express their feelings but people also need to understand that when they have their rights then even we also have the rights to put up whatever we want and if you don’t like it then do not follow it as simple as that,” she added.

She further emphasized the need to understand that sports persons also want to live a normal life.

“People need to understand that sportspeople do have other lives and it is just not limited to sports. If I am a sportsperson then I do not need to be in a sports attire. People do have lives other than sports and everybody wants to live a normal life and people should accept that,” Mithali said.

The inspirational batswoman, who recently lead India to the final of World Cup, said that she laughed off the controversy but admitted that it might affect her parents.

“I think so because when you are on a public platform then you need to think that whatever they post should not affect the family members of the people you are attacking. For me it does not matter because I have seen lot bigger challenges than just being trolled for something so frivolous and I just laughed it out,” she said.

“Probably it will not be same for my parents who come from a humble background, it was something different and a shock to them,” added the leading run-scorer in ODIs.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
