Cricketing Fraternity Mourns Sad Demise Of Singing Legend Lata Mangeshkar At The Age Of 92

Lata Mangeshkar, renowned Bollywood singer and dubbed as the Nightingale of India, passed away at the age of 92 years on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. The entire nation mourned the demise of a legend and even the cricketing fraternity took to Twitter to share their tribute to the Bharat Ratna awardee.

Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore to Deenanath Mangeshkar. She was the eldest child with sisters Asha, Meena, and Usha and brother Dinanath. All of the sisters and brothers became singers and musicians, with Asha Bhonsle rivaling her sister during both of their careers.

Her first song was “Naachu Yaa Gade” from the 1942 Marathi movie Hasaal while her first Hindi song came in the 1943 movie Gajaabhau.

Her breakthrough song proved to ‘”Aayega Aanewaala” from the 1949 movie Mahal, which launched her into prominence and she went on to rule the Bollywood playback scene for more than 6 decades. The melody queen recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films. She had sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages.

In 2001, in recognition of her contributions to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, and is only the second vocalist, after MS Subbulakshmi, to receive this honor. She’s also the recipient of three National Film Awards among many other honors she received during the span of her career.

Apart from thousands of memorable Hindi and Marathi language songs, Lata Mangeshkar is known worldwide for her heart-wrenching rendition of the song ‘Aaye Mere Watan Ke Logo’, written by Kavi Pradeep. This song was written on the backdrop of the 1963 India-China war and when she sang the song at a function in Delhi, it is said to have brought then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to tears.

Lata Mangeshkar was not only awarded the Bharat Ratna, but also received the French Legion of Honor award. Apart from this, Mangeshkar won the Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Zee Cine Award for Lifetime Achievements (1999), Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1989), Maharashtra Bhushan Award (1997), NTR National Award (1999) amongst other honors.

Confirmed by many sources, Mangeshkar sung over 30,000 songs in over 26 languages and today as the country mourns the demise of perhaps one of the greatest Indians to ever live, the cricketing fraternity also paid rich tributes to Lata Mangeshkar on Twitter.
