In what could well be the end of the road, senior pros Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have failed once again in the Cape Town Test, leaving India in a perilous place in the deciding Test match.

Starting out in the second innings, both Pujara and Rahane were expected to deliver for the team when it needed them the most. However, it wasn’t to be this time around.

On Day 3, Pujara was sent back for 9 on the second delivery by Marco Jansen. He received an awkward chest-high delivery down the leg side which he tickled away but Keegan Petersen at leg slip pulled off a one-handed screamer.

Soon after, Rahane, who was favored ahead of the unlucky Hanuma Vihari, ended up gloving a catch to first slip. Although the umpire turned down the initial appeal, the South Africans reviewed and ended up being proved right as the UltraEdge showed a spike.

With that, Rahane might have well played his last Test match considering there are plenty of talented players waiting to take up the middle-order spot. Shreyas Iyer recently made his debut against New Zealand at home, scoring a century and half-century in his debut Test.

Similarly, even Pujara might have to return to domestic cricket and regain his touch if he is to make a comeback to the team. Between them, they have one century in the past year which came in Melbourne against Australia.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane’s failures:
