Indian opener Rohit Sharma, on Saturday, once again proved the age-old cliche ‘Form is temporary and class is permanent’ with an imperious knock in the first innings of the second Test against England at the Chepauk.

On a pitch that has shown an appreciable amount of turn from the first session itself, Rohit Sharma looked like he was batting on a completely different wicket.

The Indian opener had come into the second Test following a string of underwhelming performances in the last two Tests, but on Saturday, the stylish batsman looked in his element right from the very first ball that he has faced.

After having lost an early wicket in the form of Shubman Gill, India needed Rohit Sharma to take stock of the situation. And, boy, didn’t he do that with disdain.

The 33-year-old cut, pulled, swept with absolute precision but it was his driving through the covers that were the highlight of the morning session. He looked so good while cover-driving that even Virat Kohli couldn’t help himself but express his astonishment from the dressing room

Sharma took the attack to the English bowlers right from the outset and it took him 47 balls to notch up a well-deserved half-century, and he did that with a brilliant sweep off Jack Leach.

India lost two back-to-back wickets in the form of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli at the fag end of the morning session but the fact that Rohit has rocketed his way to 80 out of the 106 runs on a turning track, meant that the hosts were not behind the eight ball despite having lost three wickets.

Rohit continued with his merry way in the post-Lunch session. He stormed his way in the 90s and he celebrated that by taking Moeen Ali downtown for his 200th six on home soil in international cricket. And, the moment that everybody had been waiting for finally came in the 42nd over of the Indian innings as Sharma peddled Moeen Ali for a couple to bring up a well-deserved 7th Test hundred of his career.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Rohit Sharma’s 100:
