Former Indian batsman Rahul Dravid has officially been appointed as Indian Men’s head coach and will take over after the conclusion of the ongoing T20 World Cup in the UAE.

Dravid’s first assignment will be the home series against New Zealand which will begin on November 17. His appointment was almost a foregone conclusion once he decided to apply for the role. Dravid has always been BCCI‘s top candidate for the role.

It is an absolute honour to be appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, I am really looking forward to this role. Under Mr (Ravi) Shastri, the team has done very well, and I hope to work with the team to take this forward,” Dravid’s statement read in BCCI release.

To take on the coaching role of the national team, Dravid had to give up the position as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He has worked with plenty of youngsters there and has also coached the U-19 and India A squads.

Having worked closely with most of the boys either at NCA, U19, and India A setup, I know they have the passion and desire to improve every day. There are some marquee multi-team events in the next two years, and I look forward to working with the players and the support staff to achieve our potential,” Dravid added.

Under Shastri, India failed to win a single ICC tournament which will continue to be a blotch on an otherwise successful stint as the head coach. Dravid’s tenure is also expected to be judged based on how the team performs in the multi-nation ICC tournaments.

Twitter was excited following Rahul Dravid’s appointment:
