England have completed a sensational win at the Chepauk and by doing that the Joe Root-led unit has condemned India to their first Test defeat at Chepauk after 22 years and their first loss on home soil since the 333-run defeat to Australia way back in 2017.
The win was set-up by champion fast bowler James Anderson, who on Tuesday, once again displayed just why he is the greatest exponent of swinging a cricket ball- conventional or reverse as put on a real clinic of reverse-swing bowling on the final day of the ongoing Test.
And, he showed that by dismissing the dangerous-looking Indian opener, Shubman Gill, with a peach of an inswinger. It all happened in the 27th over of the Indian innings when the legendary fast bowler got one to jag back into the rookie opener.
Anderson exploited the gap between bay and pad, sending the stump for a cartwheel. And, one could see that the veteran pacer enjoyed the wicket to the hilt as he lept in the air with a guttural roar so loud that it would have reverberated into the Indian dressing room.
Gill became the second Indian batsman to be dismissed on the final day of the ongoing Test in Chennai. India was dealt with a body blow early on day 05 after Jack Leach claimed his second wicket of the innings in form of Cheteshwar Pujara.
India lost their vice-captain immediately after the wicket of Shubman Gill in an identical manner as James Anderson beat Rahane’s defense to send his stumps for a cartwheel.
Anderson then proceeded to send Rishabh Pant packing after he induced the southpaw into an ill-fated drive towards mid-wicket via an off-cutter. The wheels came off for the home side as they soon lost their six-wicket after Washington Sundar knicked of off the bowling of Dom Bess.
Dom Bess was the only weak link in England’s bowling effort on the fifth morning. The off-spinner consistently dished out full tosses and Virat Kohli took a full toll, smashing him for three consecutive boundaries.
Kohli completed a well-compiled half-century post the Lunch break. The Indian captain showed exemplary control, especially against James Anderson. According to CricViz, Virat Kohli’s false shot percentage against Anderson was 0 as compared to other batsmen whose false shot percentage was 34.
Kohli, along with Ravichandran Ashwin, continued to hold the fort for Team India as they stitched a 64-run stand for the 7th wicket.
However, just as it looked like the duo were on course for a long haul, Jack Leach claimed the prized scalp of Ashwin after the off-spinner, in an attempt to cut Leach, proceeded to edge it to Jos Buttler.
And, the final nail in India’s coffin was eventually hammered as Ben Stokes cleaned up Virat Kohli with a ball that kept very low. India 8-179. Leech claimed Nadeem in the very next over before Jofra Archer knocked over Bumrah to complete a 227-run hammering of the home side.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
I don't know what the numbers say; but winning Test matches in Asia these days for visiting teams isn't simple. England have now won three in a row. That is phenomenal preparation and execution.

Joe Root as captain in Asia
Six Tests | Six winsAmong visiting captains, only Graeme Smith (8 wins/21 Tests) & Clive Lloyd (7/17) have won more Tests as skipper.
England's six consecutive wins in Asia is the second-longest behind Australia's seven bw 2002-04.#INDvENG

That was the first time Kohli has been bowled in a Test match since January 2018. He's batted 37 innings since then. #IndvEng

Credit to England for the manner in which they played in this Test. However, I have no doubt in the fact that we will come roaring back in the next match.

I really hope @josbuttler stays for at least the 2nd Test … after such a wonderful team performance surely England would want to keep this group together … Miss the ODIs & T20s … Winning a Test series in India will mean so much more … #INDvENG

A Leach stat… Last time Pujara was dismissed by a left-arm finger spinner: Feb 2017 (Steve O'Keefe, in Pune). Since then, before Leach dismissed him, he had scored 375 for 0 from 141.1 overs of left-arm finger spin. #INDvENG

This kind of knock, where others are finding it difficult to score runs tells you why he is called the best in the business. @imVkohli @bcci #INDvENG

My issue with Rahane the captain is Rahane the batsman.
After that 100 in Melbourne his scores are – 27*, 22, 4, 37, 24, 1 & 0. After a 100, class players carry their form & carry the burden of players out of form. #INDvENG— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) February 9, 2021
The gap between Rahane's bat and pad today was as big as the gap between his two good knocks.

There is a reason Jimmy Anderson is one of the best we have seen. In his first over we saw three reasons……

Two of the best you could ever see on a last-day Indian pitch! Anderson has sealed it #INDvENG

Jimmy Anderson's just matched them.

The perfect delivery by Jimmy Anderson to batsmen (Gill) who have a back foot trigger. Indian bowlers please note : Can be used against Joe Root.#ENGvIND

Now, that is a ball from a champion bowler! To go through a quality, well set batsman….Jimmy Anderson!!

That was the third time in James Anderson's career that he's bowled two batsmen in the same over. It happened in his very first Test against Zimbabwe in 2003 and against South Africa in 2017. #IndvEng
