South Africa carried over their momentum from the victory in the Test series to take a 1-0 lead in the ODI series against India on Wednesday.

Opting to bat first on a slow track, the Proteas rode on the back of twin centuries from Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen to set a fighting total of 296/4.

They began poorly and lost three wickets for just 68 runs on the board. It was then that the game turned on its head as Bavuma and Rassie stitched a 204-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

While Bavuma played a reserved knock and held down the fort at one end, Rassie ensured that the scoreboard kept ticking at the other. By the time Bavuma was sent back to the hut, South Africa already had a winning total on its hands.

In the run chase, India lost KL Rahul early but Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli cooked up a 92-run partnership for the second wicket. They were cantering along but one slip-up was all it took to begin the collapse.

From 138/1, they slipped up to 188/6, losing all their genuine batters. Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer barely had an impact while Rishabh Pant was also flustered. Shardul Thakur kept the hopes alive with a decent cameo but it wasn’t to be.

With the win, South Africa went up 1-0 in the 3-match series with the next match to be played at the same venue, Boland Park in Paarl, on Friday.
