Rajasthan Royals [RR] have kickstarted their Dream11 IPL 2020 campaign with a resounding win over CSK after their score of 7-216 proved a bridge too far for the three-time champions to scale in what turned to be an absolute run-fest at Sharjah.

Needing 217 to win, Shane Watson stroked some lusty blows in the powerplay. Watson took full advantage of Tom Curran’s first over, smoking him for back-to-back sixes and a boundary to take the score to 0-53 after 6 overs. Rahul Tewatia, however, ended Watson’s charge as the latter, in an attempt to dispatch it over cow-corner, proceeded to miss it altogether, leading to the ball shattering his stumps.

Murali Vijay’s [21 off 21 balls]  troubled stay was ended by Shreyas Gopal after he mistimed a pull straight to deep square-leg. Just like ike the last game, MSD promoted Sam Curran to hit some lusty blows, which is exactly what he did. The all-rounder smashed 17 off 6 balls which included two back-to-back sixes off Rahul Tewatia.

Ultimately, the bowler had the last laugh as he deceived Curran to effect a stumping. Tewatia did an encore on the very next delivery as debutant Ruturaj Gaikwad was stumped in an attempted wild slog. CSK-4-77.

With the required run-rate mounting, Faf du Plessis approach was really baffling. There was no clear intent as he scrapped his way to 13 off the first 15 balls. Eventually, the pressure got to Kedar Jadhav, who after having smashed three consecutive boundaries off Shreyas Gopal, fell courtesy a brilliant one-handed catch by Sanju Samson.

Du Plessis finally flexed his arms after the strategic break, smashing Rahul Tewatia for two sixes in the 15th over, reducing the equation to 86 of the last 30 balls. Du Plessis continued with the onslaught as he smashed Javdev Unadkat for three consecutive sixes in the 17th over. The former Proteas skipper affected a brilliant turn around as he smashed 44 off his last 12 balls to reduce the target down to 51 off 15 balls.

But CSK needed sustained onslaught from both ends but MS Dhoni once again struggled to get going from the outset, meandering his way to 8 of his first 11 balls. Du Plessis eventually fell in the penultimate over courtesy a mistimed stroke off Archer. With the game done and dusted, MSD flexed his muscles in the last over to smash three consecutive sixes to equal the all-time IPL record of most sixes in an IPL game.

Sanju Samson’s onslaught and Jofra Archer’s counter-attack propelled RR to 7-216

Having been put in to bat, Rajasthan Royals didn’t get off to the best of starts with Yashasvi Jaiswal perishing to Deepak Chahar in the 3rd over. Steve Smith initially struggled to get his timing but that certainly wasn’t the case with Sanju Samson.

Samson was on the money right from the very outset. The right-hander once again gave an account of why he is rated so highly in the cricketing circles. It was just the purity of his strokeplay that could have made the onlookers gasp in disbelief.

Anything that was short, was dispatched with disdain over square-leg; anything pitched on the up, was creamed past the covers. RR reached 1-54 in the powerplay overs, forcing Dhoni to turn to his spinners.

Samson greeted both Jadeja and Piyush Chawla with disdainful sixes in their very first overs as he completed a sensational 19-ball 50- the joint-fastest IPL 50 for RR. Piyush Chawla was clobbered for 28 runs in his first overs, with Steve Smith joining the party with a brilliant six of the no-ball.

The duo continued their onslaught against the spinners, smoking Chawla for back-to-back sixes over his head. And, to make matters worse for Chawla and CSK, Steve Smith displayed his cheeky touch as well, creaming the leggie with a delicate cut past third-man. RR 1-119 in 10 overs.

With spinners going for 75 runs in 5 overs between them, Dhoni turned to Ngidi and the move paid dividends immediately as Samson holed out to Chahar in the deep. One brought two for CSK as David Miller registered a diamond duck after his bat got stuck while running the second run.

Steve Smith got a lucky break thanks to Sam Curran, who dropped his catch at the boundary but that wasn’t the case with Robin Uthappa, who mistimed a lofted drive straight to Faf du Plessis.

CSK looked to have pulled things brilliantly post Samson’s dismissal before Jofra Archer produced one of the most thrilling counterattacks ever. Archer smoked Ngidi for four consecutive sixes in the last over, taking RR’s total to 7-216 in 20 overs.
