Twitter Reacts as Chris Gayle Breaks World Record in his Last ODI in Windies

Windies opener Chris Gayle’s finished his career in Windies with a 27-ball 77 as he helped his side thrash England by seven wickets in the fifth and the final ODI at St. Lucia to finish the series at 2-2.

Meanwhile, Gayle along with Oshane Thomas, who picked a five-wicket haul to level terms on the series. England registered their lowest-ever total against the Caribbeans for 113 runs in 28.1 overs. Chris Gayle’s swashbuckling knock helped Windies chase down the target in 37.5 overs. During his knock, the big Jamaican registered the fastest half-century by a Windies batsman.

Batting first, England were all out for 113 runs after Thomas ran down the English batting order. Jos Buttler and Alex Hales topped the scoring chart with 23 runs while Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite chipped in with two wickets each. During the chase, Gayle hammered the English bowlers to chase down 12.1 deliveries.

The 39-year-old walked away with the man of the series award after finishing it with 424 runs at an average of 106, with 39 sixes. Chris Gayle piled on totals of 162, 50 and 135 before this assault in Grenada. Speaking about his knock at the end of the game, the southpaw admitted he thought to go strong as this was his last ODI in his own soil. Gayle also feels they will get some respect after this series going into the World Cup.

At one stage I thought this is going to be my last (ODI) innings in the Caribbean for the West Indies, so I thought I’d go out on a high,” said Gayle. “We’ll get a bit of respect going into the World Cup,” he added.

After striking the ball really hard in this series, Chris Gayle admitted that he is reconsidering his retirement. The tall and lanky opener announced his retirement after the ICC World Cup in 2019 earlier this month.
