The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan for two years, with one year suspended, for failing to report multiple approaches made to him by bookies. The verdict left the social media divided into two halves with one group calling the judgement too harsh.

An official ICC release stated the following as the charges against Shakib:

1. Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct – in relation to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe Tri-Series in January 2018 and / or the 2018 IPL

2. Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct – in relation to a second approach in respect of the Tri-Series in January 2018

3. Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct – in relation to an IPL 2018 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kings XI Punjab on 26 April 2018.

Shakib Al Hasan admitted to all the charges under the ICC Provisions. He also accepted the sanction with the ICC in lieu of an Anti-Corruption Tribunal hearing. After satisfying with all the conditions in subject to the suspension part, the no 1 all-rounder will be free to resume cricket from October 29, 2020.

Responding to the developments, Shakib Al Hasan said that it is extremely sad for him. He accepted the sanctions and said that he didn’t fulfil his duty of reporting the approaches.

“I am obviously extremely sad to have been banned from the game I love, but I completely accept my sanction for not reporting the approaches. The ICC ACU is reliant on players to play a central part in the fight against corruption and I didn’t do my duty in this instance,” Shakib said.

The social media was in a state of shock since the news broke out. Many called out the judgement as harsh and many vouched to stand by his side during these tough times.
