Days after winning the ICC World Cup 2019, England resumed their red-ball cricket playing a one-off Test against Ireland at the Lord’s Cricket Stadium ahead of the Ashes 2019. Things didn’t pan out well for Joe Root & Co as Ireland wreaked havoc in England’s batting on the morning hour of the first day to put the host on the backfoot early in the match.

Ireland take an early lead
England skipper Joe Root opted to bat first after winning the toss as England handed debut cap to Jason Roy and Olly Stone. James Murtagh and Mark Adair who shared the new ball for Ireland ran down the English batting with Murtagh scalping a five-wicket haul. They were exceptional in the morning session, making the ball do all the talking against an in-form England side. Roy playing his first Test showed early nerves as he survived a plumb lbw appeal because the bowler then, Mark Adair, had overstepped. However, he failed to add anything more to his score of five as Murtagh found him edging one to the first slip to make a disappointing start to his Test career.

Joe Denly looked good playing some shots as he tried hard to take England out of the early troubles. But Ireland kept hitting the good lengths and posing tough questions. But they didn’t have to wait long as Mark Adair removed Denly to make things difficult for the host. Since then, it was one-way traffic for Ireland who bulldozed over England’s batting. Adair added one more to his tally removing Joe Root before the host lost three wickets at no time giving James Murtagh his fifth wicket.

Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, and Moeen Ali went back packing for ducks as Ireland spread their dominance over the game at the Lord’s as they have the host at 43 for seven. Since then, Sam Curran and Stuart Broad started the revival as England crossed the 50-run mark. But Boyd Ranking, who once played for England, joined the party to remove Broad to have them at 58 for eight. Ireland will look to clean off the tail soon and put a big total on the board to take a firm grip over the match.

?? done a bit has it….? 1st thing massive congrats to @tjmurtagh on the board at his home ground in his 1st Test ?? what a bowler he has been over the years showing you it is not just about pace but getting the ball in the right area more often that not ?? #ENGvIRE

Cant help but be pleased for @tjmurtagh going up on the honours board. Top bloke. For years people that bowl his pace are over looked but are serious bowlers if there is anything in the wicket. @ChrisRush22 would be unplayable too on this!

WTF !!
— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) July 24, 2019
Imagine winning the @cricketworldcup a week ago in that fashion and then strapping them on for a Test match a week later – mentally very challenging I’d think. Ireland ?? in charge ?

This is sensational stuff @Irelandcricket

Roy, Root and Bairstow are all out outdone by some excellent seam bowling by the Irish bowlers. Are these signs for things to come at the Ashes? #ENGvIRE

That ball that Jonny Bairstow just backed away from which subsequently bowled him seemed extremely late to pull out of. So I went back and paused it at point of delivery. #ENGvIRE #wtf? ?♂️ pic.twitter.com/U6kJVI75GV

Tim Murtagh goes onto the honours board with his five-wicket haul at the iconic Lord's stadium in London. He has been a nightmare for the England batters. Besides, he becomes first Irish to claim a five-for in the Test cricket. #ENGvIRE
