After a great start to the ODI series, the story for Team India has been the same as the T20I series. They allowed England to claw their way back into the series with a 86 runs victory. It was a thoroughly entertaining performance from the home team in all 3 departments of the game. After winning the toss, the English skipper Eoin Morgan surprisingly chose to bat first. It was a baffling decision to say the least especially given the fact that India has chased down quite a few mammoth targets in the recent past with utter disdain. However, it proved to be the correct decision in the end.

The only plus for India in the match was perhaps former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni reaching the 10,000 runs mark. He became the 4th Indian after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid to achieve the feat. Given the fact that he has batted the majority of his career at the lower middle order, it is indeed a very special achievement. However, he played a pretty ordinary innings today and even the commentators couldn’t comprehend what he was actually trying to do in the middle.

It was a special century from Joe Root which helped England post a more than competitive score of 322 on the board. It wasn’t going to be easy for India. However, given the batting line-up they had, India should have backed themselves to chase the total down. The openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan began in a resounding fashion and smashed some delightful shots.

Dhoni reaches 10 k ODI runs

Their partnership of 49 runs got India off to a flying start. However, the dismissal of Rohit started the downward slide for India. They lost Dhawan and KL Rahul in quick succession and were reduced to 60/3 from 49/0. Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli shared a good stand of 80 runs. But two quick wickets in the form of Kohli and Raina allowed England to dominate the game in the later stages.

Dhoni didn’t really go for the big shots. After Hardik Pandya’s dismissal, he simply gave up the chase and was looking to reach the landmark of 10,000 ODI runs. Eventually, India lost the match by 86 runs. Despite Dhoni reaching a special record, people will surely criticize him for the innings which he played today.
