Team India’s fast bowling department has been the talk of the town for quite some time now. They recently floored Bangladesh in the two-match series to strengthen their lead at the top of the ICC World Test Championship. Umesh Yadav, a significant role player in that group seemed satisfied with the rise in fast bowlers in the country and said that pacers nowadays are not there to roughen the ball for the spinners.
The current crop of fast bowlers – Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, and Umesh have been on top of their game and is one of the main reasons behind India’s dominance in the red-ball format. They have the lowest strike-rate among bowlers in 2019 which talks volumes about their recent form. Moreover, the side hasn’t felt the absence of their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is out owing to an injury.

We are not here just to roughen the ball for spinners: Umesh Yadav
Speaking about the growth, Umesh Yadav looked content about the recently found success. He also added that perception about fast bowlers in Indian conditions is also changing as they are not only in the side just to roughen the ball for the spinners. Umesh was at his personal best during the historic day-night Test against Bangladesh claiming a fifer to knock them out of the game.
“It feels nice when people talk about fast bowlers. People earlier talked about spinners when we played at home. They assumed the pitch would start taking turn early. Fast bowlers usually bowled with the new ball and were brought back when there was reverse swing on offer. Our job was to roughen up the ball for the spinners. Spinners even started with the new ball,” Umesh said in an interview with TOI.

Speaking further, Umesh Yadav said that there is a change in mindset among people in India with fast bowlers. He feels that they are now considered someone who can bowl all-day and given importance. Umesh also spoke about producing challenging conditions which promotes fair competition between bat and ball. He also believes that things are changing for good and hopes to contribute more to the team.
“It’s important to have good pitches for good contests. When there’s even a bit of a contest between bowlers and batsmen, then the quality of cricket improves and people love that. You need challenging conditions. There needs to be fair carry in the pitches. Fast bowlers need to be in the game. There is a change in mindset because people now value the importance of fast bowlers,” Umesh concluded.
