Unmukt Chand was under immense pressure going into the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was already dropped from the Ranji Trophy playing XI during the season and only played two games in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

A match-winning innings in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy helped him to keep his place in the Delhi team for the List A tournament or else a failure could have cost him his place. Chand grabbed the opportunity with both the hands and went onto score a century in the first game.

However, he had to battle out odds before the game, as Unmukt was injured on the eve of the game while practising. He was hit by a ball on his jaw during the practice session, which put his participation in the game in doubt. Chand, though, decided to play and went onto score a century.

He reminded everyone of Anil Kumble, who also went onto play for India when the team needed him.

Since Delhi did not have a regular opener apart from Chand, they needed him to open the inning, and the former U19 captain just did not open the innings, but also went onto score a century.

He has been advised surgery by the doctors, but the Delhi opener is all set to delay it, to play the tournament,

“I have been advised a surgery but I would delay it until this tournament gets over. I will have to be on a liquid diet for a month at least,” he told Sportstarlive.com.

The right-handed batsman has to now continue his form in the season as performance in this tournament can push Unmut ahead. If he does well, he will not just get his place back in India A side, but he can also push for a place in the national team.

Along with that, a good run in the tournament will also mean he would seal his opening place in the Delhi team. Few questions have also been raised about Unmukt’s place in the team, and performance in the tournament will see him answering to all of them.

Delhi will face Tripura in their next contest on February 7.
