Veteran Indian Cricketer Yashpal Sharma Passes Away Due To A Massive Cardiac Arrest

In a heartbreaking development, former Indian cricketer and the 1983 World Cup-winner, Yashpal Sharma has passed away due to a massive cardiac arrest on Tuesday, July 13.

Born on August 11, 1954, the 66-year-old Yashpal Sharma was regarded as one of the most gifted middle-order batter during his era.

The veteran cricketer from Ludhiana made his international debut against England in 1979 and he went on to represent his country in 37 Tests, scoring 1606 runs at an average of just over 33 with nine fifties and a couple of hundreds.

The former middle-order batter made his ODI debut against Pakistan the following year and went on to feature in 42 matches, including the 1983 World Cup semi-final against England where he was India’s leading run-scorer- a 115-ball 61 that helped his side chase down 214.

As far as domestic cricket is concerned, Yashpal Sharma scored 8933 FC runs in 193 matches which includes 21 centuries and the highest score of 201*.

Sharma, who was involved in various administrative roles with the BCCI, Punjab and Haryana Cricket Associations post his retirement, was also a popular face on new channels where he used to give his valuable insights on the game.
