The fifth day of the ongoing first Test match between India and England started with India looking to survive 90 overs, while England aiming to take the 9 wickets left in the innings. India had already lost Rohit Sharma to Jack Leach on day 4 evening and all things hinged on other batsmen for survival.
However, Leach struck on day five when he had Cheteshwar Pujara caught by Ben Stokes in slips for 15 runs. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill continued to look solid at the other end and was joined by captain Virat Kohli. The duo added 32 runs, while Gill completed his half-century, but was then clean bowled by James Anderson. The veteran England pacer was looking deadly and he further did huge damage with an amazing delivery for which the Indian vice-captain had no answer.
James Anderson does more damage, sends Ajinkya Rahane back for a duck with a ripper of a ball
James Anderson was just warming up and got the ball to reverse swing sharply, especially coming into the batsmen. Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane joined Kohli and there were hopes that the duo kept the England bowlers at bay, especially after they had tasted blood.
The experienced pacer then took just 3 balls to send back the Indian vice-captain. Anderson bowled a brilliant inswinging delivery that moved both in the air and off the pitch and Rahane, who was trying to defend on the front foot, was beaten by the movement and the ball thudded into the stumps, ending his innings on a duck.
Anderson then sent back Rishabh Pant as well, for 11 runs, breaking whatever resistance India had in hopes of saving this Test match and taking a lead in the four-Test series. Virat Kohli remains at the crease in hopes of doing the unthinkable, but may shortly run out of partners.
James Anderson, on the other hand, is looking devastating on the fifth-day pitch, getting more swing and movement from the ball, than what Indian bowlers did. He removed three big batsmen in Shubman Gill, who was well set, then accounted for Ajinkya Rahane with a screamer of a ball and removed the dangerous Rishabh Pant for 11 runs, getting him to play a false shot.
