England all-rounder Ben Stokes found himself in the midst of a raging controversy after he claimed a bump catch of Indian opener Shubman Gill during the second session of the ongoing pink-ball Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
It all happened during the fourth ball of the second over of Indian innings when Stuart Broad induced an outside edge off Shubman Gill’s bat.
Ben Stokes claimed a low catch at the second slip but the on-field umpire proceeded to go upstairs to check the conclusivity of the catch. The soft signal given by the umpire was ‘Out’.And, so it needed conclusive evidence on replays to overrule the on-field call.
To everyone’s surprise, the replay showed that the ball had indeed dribbled off Ben Stokes’ hands.
And, as soon as the replays flashed on the giant screen, the camera panned on the Indian dressing room to catch a glimpse of Virat Kohli’s reaction.
And, Kohli was animated as usual. The Indian captain was at animated best during the entire England innings and it wasn’t really a surprise that he made it absolutely clear as to what he thought of Ben Stokes claiming a bump catch.
“Abey kya ch****a ho gya kya” one could read Virat Kohli’s lips.
Meanwhile, England eventually claimed their first wicket in the form of Shubman Gill, after the opener mistimed an attempted pull stroke off Jofra Archer. One wicket brought two for the visitors as Jack Leach pinned Cheteshwar Pujara plumb in front of the wicket to reduce India to 2/34 in 15.5 overs.
