Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are two of India’s most successful Test captains in the modern era. While MS Dhoni-led Team India to the numero-uno spot in Test match rankings for the very first time in the country’s cricketing history, Virat Kohli scripted a resurgence in the post-Dhoni era, taking the team from the No.7 spot to the top of the pile.

While both have been successful in their own right, their methods have been very different. Former Indian seamer Ajit Agarkar has reckoned that one of the major differences between MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli’s Test leadership is that Kohli places a lot more faith in his seamers as compared to Dhoni, who was at ease with the spinners.

‘The major difference I see is that MS Dhoni used to depend a lot on the spin bowlers to make his strategies. Virat Kohli, in a slight deviation, has shown more faith in fast bowlers.” Ajit Agarkar said on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’

Indian fast bowling has undergone a whirlwind revolution in the past five years. Not only are the fast bowler’s fitter than ever before, but they have also developed potency to annihilate any batting unit in varied conditions. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav have wreaked havoc in both overseas as well as home conditions in the past 2-3 seasons and Agarkar feels that the manner in which Kohli has encouraged his seamers, has played a huge role in the resurgence.

“Because of that when India plays overseas Test matches, it has made a lot of difference to the results. The performance has been better and we have been able to compete more. Probably this was a stark difference because both had a different way of leading, but both got a lot of success,” Agarkar said.

Agarkar also added that the methods of both Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni might be different but the thing that binds both these captains is the immense faith that they have shown in their players.

Virat Kohli has been a captain for such a long time in all formats and we can see how good the results have been. The methods might be different but if you show faith in your players, then you get good results as a captain.” he added.
