Former Indian cricket team coach Anshuman Gaekwad believes the current Indian team led by Virat Kohli is the best in the country’s history. He said that the current team is better than the previous Indian teams because of its balance and the world-class players that are part of it.

Anshuman Gaekwad became the coach of the Indian team twice, first in 1997 till 1999 and second one in August 2000 to October 2000. Speaking about the current side, Anshuman Gaekwad said that the Virat Kohli-led side has all the bases covered.

He recalled the old times when India did not have pacers who could regularly win matches for the team while praising the current pace department.

“If you ask me, I believe that he (Virat Kohli) has the best possible team in Indian history. Bowling, batting, balance of team are the best. Up till now, we had no pace bowlers. We had Karsan, Roger, Kapil, but they didn’t win matches for you all the time. Today, they have a battery of pacers with options, and they are winning matches for you,” Anshuman Gaekwad told Sportskeeda.

Virat Kohli took over from MS Dhoni as the captain of the Indian Test team in 2014 and the limited-overs teams in 2017. Since then, he has done really well as captain across formats. While he is yet to guide India to a win in ICC tournaments, the overall performances have been very good.

Under him, India remained at the top of ICC Test rankings for more than three years and have also delivered consistently in ODIs and T20Is. Under Virat Kohli, India won their first-ever Test and ODI series in Australia in 2018-19 season and also won ODI series in South Africa and New Zealand.

As far as his record in ICC tournaments is concerned, he led India to the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy and the semifinal of last year’s World Cup.
