One of the major surprises in India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa is the change in the spin department. They rested Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in the T20I format and asked the youngsters to fill the shoes of the Wrist duo. Regarding the same, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli lets his opinion out.
Rahul Chahar and Washington Sundar are part of the T20 squad for the South Africa series beginning in Dharamsala on September 15. They both also travelled to the Caribbean last month. Alongside the duo, Ravindra Jadeja and Krunal Pandya also available for the team, who also adds a depth to the batting lineup.
It is about finding the balance – Virat Kohli
Speaking of the same, Virat Kohli quoted that depth of the batting is one of the main reasons behind their omission from the squad. At the same time, Virat Kohli also wants to test the next couple of series to see whether there are any youngsters being able to perform as per the team requirements.
“That was one of the reasons also to give opportunities to the guys who have done well in the domestic format and the T20 format and in the IPL also. So I think it’s about finding the best balance that we can as a side and not necessarily stick to one kind of combination. If all teams across the world are batting till No. 9, 10, why can’t we,” the captain explained.
You need to take tough calls at times:
Further, Virat Kohli went on to add saying that the rest of the teams in the world cricket has got the batting depth till 9th to 10th. It is something which Virat Kohli and the team management also wanted in order to be in the race. Especially, with the ICC World Cup 2020 in the sights, Virat Kohli wants to get the balance right to the team.
“So, you need to take those calls at one stage. Bringing those guys (Chahal and Kuldeep) at one stage was also not taken well by people. Look, whatever decisions are made, are to make sure that the team has the best and strongest balance that we can have approaching the T20 World Cup that we have next year,” Kohli said in the press conference.
Well, as Virat Kohli said, the Indian team has always suffered from their batting lineup whenever Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal made into the playing XI. With the considerable time left to the world cup, India might look for various combination to prepare the strong squad.
India and South Africa will play in three T20Is starting in Dharmsala on September 15. The following two games are in Mohali (September 18) and Bengaluru (September 22). India, however, will play twelve Twenty20 Internationals in the next five months at home. That will give the selectors to choose a probable squad for the T20 World Cup which is scheduled to play in October 2020.
