It was a superb piece of wrist spin bowling by Kuldeep Yadav as India restricted England to a below-par score of 268. England had scored the highest ODI total at this venue a few weeks earlier. They posted a mammoth score of 481 in their allotted 50 overs. However, it was totally different as England faced India in the opening ODI.

The English openers got off to a great start and shared a 70 runs stand between each other. However, it was Kuldeep Yadav who provided the maiden breakthrough in the form of Roy’s wicket. He went for a reverse sweep and ended up giving an easy catch. Joe Root was bamboozled with a brilliant turning delivery.

Jonny Bairstow also fell in quick succession as he was bamboozled by a perfect wrong-un from Kuldeep. The onfield umpire thought the ball would have pitched outside the leg stump. However, after taking the review the decision went in favour of the visitors. Yuzvendra Chahal bagged a solitary wicket in the middle as England lost four wickets in quick time.

Kuldeep came back strongly in his 2nd spell and got the most important wicket of Jos Buttler. It was a strangle down the leg side and MS Dhoni held on to a terrific catch. Ben Stokes who played a lackluster innings was also bagged by Kuldeep. The southpaw went for a reverse sweep and was brilliantly caught in the point region by Siddharth Kaul.

He got one more bonus wicket as David Willey gave a straightforward catch to the deep fielder while he attempted a big shot. It was simply world class bowling by Kuldeep. On a pitch which is known to be a batting paradise, Kuldeep made a star-studded batting line-up look clueless in front of his exceptional bowling.

Sehwag’s message to Kuldeep

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag was very impressed with his spell and took to his twitter handle to congratulate him. “What a high-quality spin bowling spell from @imkuldeep18. His top 5 best ODI performances have all come overseas. Katappa ne Baahubali ko kyun maara pata chal gaya, but how to play Kuldeep, England ko abhi nahi. Great effort #ENGvIND,” Sehwag wrote.
