The man behind the transformation of Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) side this season, Virender Sehwag, calls India favourites to clinch the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 scheduled in England.
Indian cricket team has been on a roll in bilateral ties since the loss against South Africa at home in 2015. Since then, India won all series, the Asia Cup and eventually reached the semi-finals of World Twenty20 and finals of the Champions Trophy 2017 in England.
Further, India is currently ranked No. 1 in Tests and are coming off an away win at Johannesburg which resulted in a 2-1 series win in South Africa’s favour.
Sehwag cited out India’s bowling strength as the primary factor which would help them clinch their fourth World Title.
“The kind of ODI team we have, we are favourites to win the 2019 World Cup. Don’t you believe it? Absolutely (we are favourites),” Virender Sehwag commented during a promotional event.
After losing the first couple of matches in the three-match Test series, the Virat Kohli-led Indian side managed to orchestrate an epic comeback in the challenging condition of Johannesburg.
“This team has the capability to win the Test series outside India, with the kind of bowling and batting we have. We just missed to win the Test series in South Africa, or else we could have created history,” continued the Nawab of Najafgarh.
Sehwag affirmed that Kohli has the advantage of a brilliant balance in the side, which Sourav Ganguly was devoid of during his era.
“In our days, we had Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar and Ashish Nehra. But these four never played together, except in 2003. When we made the final, as either one of them was injured. This team has lot more capability and can deliver in any conditions,” the KXIP director of cricket operations stated.
India ranked number in Tests and ODIs, third in T20Is.
With the absence of David Warner and Steve Smith in the upcoming series Down Under, India has a perfect opportunity to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Virender Sehwag suggested that with or without the Aussie duo, India should win the series.
“It does not matter if they are with the team, or not. Even then, we will win,” concluded Sehwag.
