The Indian women’s team created history today at Newlands, Cape Town after clinching the ODI as well T20I series in South Africa. Former Indian international Virender Sehwag brought into notice this exceptional feat from the women’s brigade with a tweet of his own.

Before coming into the final match of the series at Cape Town, India already led the series by 2-1. After losing the toss, India posted a daunting total of 166 for the loss of four wickets on a seamer-friendly pitch. Mithali Raj continued her rich form in the series and set up the Indian victory with her 50-ball 62.

Harmanpreet Kaur (27) and Jemimah Rodriguez (44) chipped in with vital quickfire contributions down the order to help post a challenging total in front of the hosts. Except for captain Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp, all bowlers went for plenty.

Chasing a steep total, South African batters had no answers to the likes of Shikha Pandey, Rumeli Dhar and Rajeshwar Gaekwad. The Indian trio picked up three wickets each to decimate their opposition. The bowlers kept chipping in with wickets and reduced the hosts to 71-6.

Hard-hitting South African Chloe Tyron and Marizanne Kapp tried to delay the inevitable with their resistance. In the end, the home side was bowled out for a meagre total of 112 within 18 overs. They handed the Indians a momentous victory by 54 runs.

With this win, India clinched the 5-match T20I series by a margin of 3-1. Mithali Raj bagged the Player of the match as well as the series award for her superlative performance. The 35-year old talismanic Indian batter smashed unbeaten knocks of 76 and 54 during the East London and Potchefstroom T20Is.

Looking at this imperious Indian performance, Virender Sehwag took to Twitter to congratulate the women’s team. “Many congratulations to @BCCIWomen on doing the double over South Africa. Winning 2-1 in ODI and 3-1 in T20. Well done girls ! #SAWvINDW,” tweeted Sehwag.
