Virender Sehwag Reminisces India's 1983 World Cup Victory

Former India swashbuckling opener, Virender Sehwag reminisced one of the most cherished days in the Indian cricketing history when the Kapil Dev led-side lifted the prestigious World Cup in 1983.
Meanwhile, on this day, 35 years ago, the Indian cricket changed forever, for its good. However, many didn’t count India to lift the title among the heavyweight teams namely Australia, Windies, England, and Pakistan.
India were clearly the underdogs going into the final against Windies. India were put to bat first and they immediately lost their star batsman Sunil Gavaskar for 2. However, Kris Srikkanth (38) and Mohinder Amarnath (26) steadied the ship for India. The side from the sub-continent were looking good reeling at 90 for 3.
Since then, Windies rattled the Indian middle-order with every bowler chipping in with useful contributions. India managed to put only 183 runs on the board and it looked like a cakewalk for the Islanders.
However, India had some other plans in mind as they came out all guns blazing. The bowlers did an amazing job led by Madan Lal and Amarnath. Both returned with three wickets each well supported by Balwinder Sandhu as Windies rattled for 140 runs as the team went into the history books.
Indian cricket, since then changed forever, however, they had to wait for 28 years to win another World Cup in 2011.
Sehwag relives the past
On this auspicious day, Sehwag reminisced the past and admitted that this will be etched in the memory of every Indian sports lover. Furthermore, he also hoped that the current Indian team repeats it in the upcoming World Cup, next year.
“This photo will forever remain in the memory of every Indian cricket fan and so will this victory, a victory which changed the face of Indian cricket. 35 years have passed and hope our Indian team repeats this a year from now at the same venue,” the post read.
