Former Pakistan speedster Waqar Younis wants Pakistan and India to start winning Test matches in overseas conditions and produce their best there. The arch-rivals who is currently competing in the Asia Cup has struggled in England very recently. India was thrashed by England by a 4-1 margin. However, India was quite competitive in the series and a little better performances could well have turned the scoreline the other way around.

Waqar Younis during an interaction with Gulf News stated that both India and Pakistan are great ODI teams. However, they should start performing in overseas conditions as well. “Indian and Pakistan are very good one-day sides, they produce thrillers. They should perform well in conditions abroad too.”

If India or Pakistan want to win, especially in England, they need to go two or three weeks early and play some side games. Waqar felt that the subcontinental teams must prepare a little better before going to England. They have to play against the moving ball which creates the indecision in their mind.

Meanwhile, the former pacer also slammed the cramped schedule for all the teams in the tournament. Almost all the teams in the competition had to play back to back matches. Meanwhile, even in overseas tours, the schedule are pretty cramped. It doesn’t allow the visiting teams to prepare well in English conditions which have been one of the main reasons behind the underperformance of the subcontinental teams in England.

“I think they need to prepare a little bit better because especially when you go to England you have to play against a moving ball. You need to be there early and get used to it. Nowadays, the present schedule doesn’t get teams enough time. It’s important for BCCI to maybe send the team two to three weeks early and play matches. If they did they would have done it would have made a made a huge difference.”

Meanwhile, the former speedster is also surprised by the fact that most teams are made to play Test matches in England right away without giving them enough chances of practice in difficult conditions.

“You are straight away into the Test match that is why you get exposed. English bowlers are very used to their own conditions and it is very hard. Doesn’t matter if you are a Virat Kohli or Shikar Dhawan or any big names but if you are not used to conditions, it can be tough.”

Waqar also pointed out the fact that teams like England struggle badly when they tour India apart from exceptions.  “ Likewise when they (England) come to India on spinning conditions, they struggle. So I think if India or Pakistan want to win especially in England they have to go early. They need to plan the tour better and maybe send the team two or three weeks early and play some side games. It’s been a while they have won in England.”
