The young off-spinner from Tamil Nadu, Washington Sundar is keen to make his Indian Premier League (IPL) experience count in the upcoming tour to England.
Meanwhile, for both Sundar and his franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the current edition of the league didn’t went well in one way or another. Sundar managed to pick only four wickets in seven matches.
However, after his debut IPL edition and the recent tour to Sri Lanka, he was hoping to play a stellar role for RCB.
However, things didn’t turn up exactly the way he wanted. Washington, though, has taken it in his stride and insists there was a lot to take away from the last two months.
“The experience was very good. To be honest, playing or not playing depends on the selection group. There are a lot of things involved when it comes to making the playing XI in IPL – four foreign players, team combination, etc. It’s not disappointing at all. Whenever you play a long tournament like the IPL, there are a lot of things you learn irrespective of how you do,” he told TOI.
With Ireland and England’s tour coming up in month’s time, Washington will be hoping to put some of the things he has learned into use, having earned selection in both the One-day Internationals and Twenty20 squads.
Need to be strong mentally: Sundar
The young all-rounder Sundar admitted that he will look to continue doing the basics right in England.
Meanwhile, this will be Sundar’s first tour the land of Three Lions.
“I have never played cricket in England before. The challenge will be to get the best out of myself in those conditions. I should not be looking to do things too differently. I just need to be mentally prepared in all aspects. If I can do that, I have the belief that results will go my way and I can succeed there,” he assessed.
Washington Sundar also showered praise on Virat Kohli, who was his skipper at RCB. He admitted that Kohli is very supportive and always help with strategies.
Moreover, this will be Sundar’s first opportunity to be part of a full-strength Indian side with Kohli at the helm of affairs.
It will be a huge opportunity for Sundar to make a long-lasting impression in England.
