Hilton Cartwright, a Western Australia(WA) batsman got out most bizarrely ever during their Sheffield Shield clash against New South Wales at Sydney. Meanwhile, heroics from Cameron Bancroft in both the innings couldn’t stop WA going down by an innings and 51 runs.

Cartwright, who was batting at three having faced 45 balls pooled one from a half-tracker from Jason Sangha. The ball which was struck hard ricocheted back after hitting the fielder positioned at the forward short-leg in the form of Nick Larkin. Unfortunately for the batman, the balls ballooned right in the air for a simple catch to Sangha after hitting the helmet.

However, according to cricket.com.au, the wicket would not have stood before 2017. Before 2017, any ball that struck a fielder’s helmet was automatically ruled a dead ball. However, in the wake of the passing of former Australia batsman Phillip Hughes, the lawmakers brought a change in the rule. Cricket Australia changed in the law in the 2016-17 season as ICC followed them 12 months later.

Nick Larkin, who was at the receiving end, didn’t seem to be in any discomfort after the blow. The medical staff gave him a clean chit after through assessment only to change his helmet as Hilton Cartwright went back in disbelief.

Meanwhile, Western Australia suffered due to a poor batting effort from their batters. New South Wales posted 477 runs in reply to WA’s 279 in the first innings. Their poor show with the bat continued as the crumbled down for 147 runs in the second essay with Steve O’Keefe bagging five wickets to secure a win by an innings and 51 runs.

NSW will play their next game against Queensland while WA will face South Australia both starting from March 3.
