Virat Kohli, on Monday, further enhanced his reputation as the best batsman of this generation with a splendid knock in the ongoing third England vs India Test. The India skipper scored 103 to put his team in firm command of the proceedings.

Kohli was rarely troubled though as he started the day on the overnight score of 8. Barring the reprieve he got at the hands of Keaton Jennings when on batting on 93, it was a flawless knock. And with nothing working out against Kohli, Ben Stokes decided to take matters in his own hands. In the 75th over of the innings, the allrounder tried to distract the 29-year old while standing at the slip cordon. He was perhaps reminding Kohli of the way he got out in the first innings.

The India skipper was batting on 97 and had flashed hard at an Adil Rashid delivery. As a result, he had ended up edging the ball to Stokes at first slip. However, Kohli did not lose his composure this time around and went on to compile a fine century.

Chris Woakes ended Kohli’s knock. But by then, the right-handed batsman had already done his work to put his team in the driver’s seat. India eventually declared on 352 for 7, thus setting England an improbable target of 521.

Meanwhile, Kohli’s second century of the series and 23rd Test ton helped him broke the record of most runs by an Indian skipper in a Test series in England. Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin previously held the record.

Azharuddin had scored 426 runs during the tour of 1990. The right-hander now has 440 runs for the series.

With two more Tests still to play, Kohli also has a strong chance to surpass Rahul Dravid’s tally of 602 runs for the most by an Indian in England.
