Watch: Comedy Of Errors Ends With Vernon Philander's Run Out

The first day of the ongoing second Test in Centurion was looking primed to be South Africa’s day until Faf du Plessis decided to call Hashim Amla for a quick single. Amla had defended the ball with soft hands before hesitatingly setting off for a run that cost him his wicket as bowler Hardik Pandya ran across and effected a brilliant run out.

Four runs later, Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Quinton de Kock for a duck before a moment of madness saw South Africa losing another wicket in the form of Vernon Philander as they found themselves reduced to 251 for six from 246 for 3. Pandya was once again the bowler, bowling a short delivery to Philander, making him play with his soft hands.

But unlike the last run-out where du Plessis was at fault for calling Amla for a tight single, Philander was at fault this time as his desperation to get to the non-striker’s end cost him his wicket. The right-handed batsman set off for the single as soon as the ball left the bat. However, in doing so, he did not pay heed to du Plessis’ call from the other end as the Proteas skipper was shouting at the top of his voice to avoid another runout. But by the time, Philander saw du Plessis; he was standing beside him at the non-striker’s end while Parthiv Patel did not waste any time in throwing the ball to Pandya at the striker’s end who did the rest.

Here is a clip of that comical run out:

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
