Team India‘s premier off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin had a great outing on the first day of the first Test at Edgbaston as he claimed four for 60 – to keep India on top. However, an interesting thing took place between Ashwin and wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik on August 1 (Wednesday).

Meanwhile, England started off well after Joe Root opted to bat first on an overcast morning. England openers Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings smashed loose deliveries to the boundary to give somewhat a cautious start. Pace spearhead Umesh Yadav for India was erratic to make it too easy for the England batsmen.

However, off-spinner Ashwin drew the first blood when Virat Kohli brought him at one change. Since then, England batsmen dominated the proceedings throughout. But, an unfortunate dismissal brought India back into the game as Mohammed Shami dismissed Jennings.

Dawid Malan was soon to follow as Shami trapped him right in front of the stumps.

England skipper Joe Root once formed good resistance backed by the inform Jonny Bairstow. The duo added 103 runs for the fourth wicket and looked well set for a massive score. But against the run of play, a moment of brilliance from India skipper Kohli got his counterpart via run-out at the score of well-made 80.

Things started to shift quickly and India made a comeback into the game late in the evening session. The bowlers bowled some tight line and length to make life difficult for the English batsmen. It was Ashwin again who did the damage by removing Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes to make things easier for India.

Umesh, who was erratic in morning bowled good lengths and Ishant Sharma also chipped in with one wicket to keep India ahead on the first day.

Dinesh Karthik and Ravichandran Ashwin spoke in Tamil at Edgbaston:

Meanwhile, during the course of the game, wicket-keeper batsman Karthik continuously kept on cheering Ashwin. The duo spoke in their mother tongue, Tamil, which made it difficult for the others to understand as heard in the stump mic.

Ashwin was brilliant as he bowled good areas making life difficult for English batter. Karthik, on the other hand, provided continuous support guiding him from the back.
