CCTV footage of the accident involving Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Mendis has surfaced. The right-handed batsman had hit a 74-year-old man, killing him in the early hours, in the Colombo suburb of Panadura.

Later on Sunday, the local police confirmed that Kusal Mendis was arrested for knocking down a pedestrian while driving. Police also said that the batsman would  be produced before a magistrate later on Sunday.

An integral part of Sri Lanka team, Kusal Mendis has represented Sri Lanka in 44 Tests and 76 ODIs. He scored scoring 2995 runs, 2164 runs, and 484 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively. He was part of the national squad which had resumed training after the COVID-19 lockdown.

Sri Lankan news outlet DailyMirror has released the CCTV footage of the accident. The footage shows how Kusal Mendis’ car hit the cyclist and the damage inflicted on the cycle after the accident. The front wheel of the cycle was completely destroyed while Kusal Mendis’ car was also damaged.

Kusal Mendis could face a tough punishment for the accident. In 2003, former Sri Lankan leg-spinner Kaushal Lokuarchchi was sentenced to jail for a period of four years after he crashed his car into a pedestrian resulting in her death.

Meanwhile, cricket around the world has not started yet due to the pandemic. The game came to a halt in March in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. International cricket will finally resume later this week when England and West Indies lock horns in the first of the three-match Test series from July 8.
