Sri Lanka and India clashed in the first T20I of the three-match series on July 25, 2021, Sunday at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. India came into this match losing the third ODI. The Men in Blue handed debuts to Prithvi Shaw and Varun Chakravarthy for this match.

The home side came into this match high on confidence and also gave debuts to two players in Charith Asalanka and Chamika Karunaratne. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and chose to field first keeping in mind the dampness of the pitch and the faint grass covering as well.

Prithvi Shaw Gets Out First Ball On His T20I Debut

The Mumbai-based opener Prithvi Shaw finally made his T20I debut for India and had previously said that he wanted to focus on the 20-over format going forward and making sure he booked his seat for the T20 World Cup to be played in UAE in October- November.

He was expected to show the magic and touch he had shown in the ODI series where he gave India flying starts. However, Dushmantha Chameera made sure that didn’t happen. In fact, Chameera bowled a picture-perfect outswinger the first ball to Shaw, who has poor foot movement at the start of his innings.

Shaw didn’t move his leg and it resulted in him edging the ball to the keeper and was given out by the umpire. He became the third Indian to get out for a duck on debut and the second Indian batsman to get out on the first ball of a T20I match after KL Rahul.

Here is the video of Prithvi Shaw’s dismissal:

Much was expected of the right-hander who has a good reputation in the shortest format of the game and came into the Sir Lanka white-ball tour after a good first half of the IPL 2021.

This is the last T20I series India will play before the T20 World Cup which begins in October in the UAE. After this series, Indian players will participate in the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021), which begins from September 19 onwards and final of which will be played on October 15.
