Indian women’s stupendous show in the just-concluded World Cup seems to have finally changed the scenario of the game in this cricket-obsessed country. It was 3.45 am but Mithali Raj & Co. were pleasantly surprised when they walked out of the plane at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai to see hundreds of fans giving them a hero’s welcome.
Team India has won one each and every heart with their valiant performance in the tournament and are now reaping the rewards for it as women cricket’s popularity in the country has been at an all-time high. No one had given even an outside chance to the Women in Blue, who had played the qualifiers, to make it to the World Cup. But the Mithali Raj-led team proved the detractors wrong in the very first game by beating hosts England. They went on to defeat the likes of West Indies, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, New Zealand and defending champions Australia to make it to the final.
India were also agonisingly close to winning the final against England but a dramatic collapse dashed their hopes as they lost the match by 9 runs after losing their last 7 wickets for just 28 runs. But despite the loss, everyone across the country has been mighty impressed with the ladies’ performance and the welcome they received at the airport certainly proves that.
Here are the videos showing the players getting a warm welcome:
