Bangladesh had their back against the wall when they came out to bat in the second innings of the ongoing first Test against India. The hosts had taken full command on the game after piling up a mammoth total of 493 for 6 (declared) in their first innings. Prior to that, the visitors were all out for a paltry 150 in their first innings.
India rode on their in-form Mayank Agarwal’s career-best 243 to post the big total. The likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma failed but Agarwal made sure to keep India ahead. He was well supported by Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja as all three scored fifties.
Bangladesh needed a solid start with the bat to keep alive their faint hopes of saving the game. However, Indian pacers did not let them do that. Umesh Yadav gave India the early breakthrough by dismissing Imrul Kayes in the sixth over before veteran Ishant Sharma sent Shadman Islam packing with a cracking delivery to leave Bangladesh reeling at 16 for 2.

It was a stunning delivery from Ishant Sharma. The ball pitched outside off and jagged back in sharply, leaving Shadman more or less clueless. The opening batsman did play for the swing but was a bit late in executing his plan. In the meantime, the ball zipped through the gap and hit the top of middle. The tourists’ condition has worsened as India are looking set to wrap things up inside three days.
At the time of writing this report, the Tigers were reeling at 48 for 4. India, meanwhile, will be looking to extend their winning start to the ICC World Test Championship. Having won all of their five games so far, the hosts are favourites to win the ongoing game too. Bangladesh, on the other hand, need nothing less than a miracle to save the ongoing game.
