It was a horrific performance by England on the opening day of the 1st Test against New Zealand. Courtesy some sensational bowling by Trent Boult and Tim Southee; the visitors were skittled out for a meagre 58 runs in just the 21st over. None of the English batsmen were able to cope with the pace and swing of Boult and kept going down like a pack of cards.

Boult began with the wicket of Alastair Cook. The southpaw poked at a short of length delivery outside the off stump only to be caught by Tom Latham behind the stumps. Captain Joe Root received a peach of a delivery and was castled without bothering the scorers. Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali bagged ducks as England faced the prospects of getting bowled out for the lowest Test score.

While most of the wickets were the credit of the two bowlers Boult and Southee, the credit for the wicket of Stuart Broad goes to Kiwis skipper Kane Williamson. It was a full-length delivery outside the off stump. Broad went for an expansive drive and could only manage an outside edge. It was flying over the slip cordon, but Williamson had other ideas.

He gave a valiant effort by putting up his hand, and the ball stuck in his grasp. It was a stunning catch. Following the dismissal, England was reduced to 27/9. In the end, it was a good knock of 33 runs from Craig Overton which helped the visitors get past the half-century mark.

In reply, New Zealand began quite strongly and ended the day’s play on 175/3. Skipper Williamson was batting on 91 when stumps were taken while Henry Nicholls was the other unbeaten batsman. Meanwhile English speedster Stuart Broad also became only the 2nd English bowler after James Anderson to bag 400 Test wickets when he dismissed Tom Latham.
