It took India only two overs to complete the proceedings in the third Test and beat South Africa by an innings and 202 runs. The writing was very much on the wall for the Proteas after they ended day three on 132 for 8 in their second innings and still trailed India’s first innings total by 203 runs. The beleaguered visitors were all out for just 162 after resuming their first innings on 9 for 2 on day three.

Asked to follow-on, South Africa did not show much resistance in the second innings either and finished the day on a precarious 132 for 8. It looked like India would wrap up the game inside three days after reducing the Proteas to 36 for 5. However, debutant George Linde (27), Dane Piedt (23), Theunis de Bruyn (30no) – a concussion replacement for Dean Elgar – Kagiso Rabada (12) and Anrich Nortje (5no) made sure that the game extend to the fourth day.

However, the Proteas could not delay the inevitable and lasted only 12 balls on day four. But the game ended in a bizarre and dramatic manner. Anrich Nortje and Theunis de Bruyn, who had replaced Dean Elgar as a concussion substitute in the second innings, managed to see off the first over of the day bowled by Mohammed Shami.

But Shahbaz Nadeem didn’t let them extend their stay on the crease for long. On the fifth ball of his first over, Nadeem dismissed de Bruyn. And on the very next ball, he had Lungi Ngidi in a bizarre manner. The left-arm spinner bowled a flighted delivery outside the off-stump and Ngidi hit it hard towards the non-striker’s end. The ball went on to hit Anrich Nortje’s shoulder before going up in the air and Nadeem ended up picking an easy catch.

India, meanwhile, extended their winning run in ICC Test Championship to five games. The Virat Kohli-led side is yet to lose points in the Championship.

Here is a clip of that dismissal:
