Ahead of their three-match ODI series against Australia, New Zealand players ditched their traditional black jerseys and out on the teal strip in Sydney. New Zealand players were last seen in the teal kit almost two decades ago. The teal jersey has a historical significance for New Zealand as it was the jersey in which they won their first and only ICC tournament so far when they won the ICC Knockout Trophy in 2000.
But in 2003, they switched to all black strip and have remained in the same colour since then before a fan vote saw them bring back the teal kit for the upcoming ODI series and the T20I series at home. New Zealand Cricket opened the fan vote a year ago with four finalists: the teal, the 1980s beige, the grey hooped ensemble of the early 1990s and the black shouldered number from 1993-94. The fans eventually picked the teal.
New Zealand stars Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee displayed the retro kit on Tuesday and the cricket board posted the photo on social media. Just like New Zealand, Australia will also wear one of their retro kits after a fan vote. The Aaron Finch-led side will wear the bright yellow uniform which Steve Waugh’s side wore to victory in the 1999 World Cup in England.

Meanwhile, the ODI series between Australia and New Zealand get underway on Friday in Sydney. Having never won an ODI series in Australia, New Zealand will be desperate to end their drought this time around. The moment is with the Kiwis after their thumping win over India in the three-match series.
Australia, on the other hand, have struggled to get going in ODIs this year. In January, they lost 1-2 to India before losing 0-3 to South Africa earlier this month.
