Getting your maiden cap for the national team is something every aspiring spokesperson dreams of. And, that moment arrives it is bound to make them emotional. And, that is exactly what happened with right-arm pacer Sandeep Warrier who couldn’t hide his emotions when he was represented with his maiden T20I cap ahead of the series-deciding third T20I against Sri Lanka in Colombo.
Sandeep Warrier wasn’t even in the Indian squad for the T20I series against Sri Lanka.
He went with the team as a net bowler. But, with Krunal Pandya getting infected with Covid and as many eight first-choice players who had come in contact with the all-rounder forced to isolate, the BCCI had no choice but to add Warrier, Simarjeet Singh, R. Sai Kishore, Ishan Porel, and Arshdeep Singh in the main squad.
None of the newly added players got an opportunity to feature in the second T20I on Wednesday night but with Navdeep Saini injuring his shoulder while fielding, an opportunity opened up.
And, given the fact that Sandeep has the ability to swing the ball up front and take wickets in the power play, the right-hander was chosen as Saini’s replacement.
Sandeep Warrier has thus far featured in 57 First-class, 55 List A, and 54 T20s and has claimed 186, 66, and 53 wickets respectively.
He was picked by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2019 season but since he has played just 4 games.
