Australia’s players will be donning the iconic golden helmets and the shooting star jerseys when they take on New Zealand in the upcoming three-match ODI series at home. Aaron Finch & Co. will wear the famous kits of for the first time in two decades in the forthcoming series. It is the same kit that the Steve Waugh-led side wore when it won the 1999 World Cup in England.

Having worn gold helmets in one-day cricket for more than 20 years following their debut during World Series Cricket in the late 1970s, the Australian side switched to the green following the 2000-01 home tri-series against the West Indies and Zimbabwe. Despite their fielding caps remaining of a gold hue, Australia decided to make the change to the same dark green helmets used in Test matches.

Cricket Australia chose the kit after an online voting from fans. A total of eight throwback kits were put forward during the voting and, after nearly half a million votes were cast, the bright yellow 1999 uniform emerged as the winner. The fans must be excited to see the return of the famous kits.

Ahead of the second debut of that jersey, Steve Smith has taken a hilarious dig at it. During a net session on Wednesday, the former Australia captain hilariously took a dig at the former Australia players’ strike-rate, saying:

“Now that we were these helmets, do we strike at 60?”

He burst into laughter after that comment before asking the cameraman whether he recorded his comment. Steve Smith then decided to do some damage control by saying:

“70? 10 overs, four maidens. Lucky the game’s evolved, hey?”

Australia will be looking to bounce back in the series after suffering a whitewash at the hands of South Africa in the three-match ODI series. New Zealand, on the other hand, will be high on confidence after whitewashing India in a three-match ODI series.
