There was a huge drama on day three of the recently-concluded second Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa in Colombo. The drama unfolded when Proteas opener Dean Elgar edged a Dilruwan Perera delivery and was caught behind the stumps.

In the 16th over of the innings, Perera bowled on tossed up delivery which spun away outside off. Elgar went for the cut and paid a heavy price as he ended up edging it. Keeper Niroshan Dickwell took a sharp catch as the umpire did not wait in raising his finger. A disappointed Elgar headed towards the dressing room before the umpires decided to check whether he was out off a no ball. And by the time, they could reach a conclusion, Elgar was already on the pavilion while Hashim Amla was inside the field.

The umpires then signalled a no ball and called back Elgar. Amla, on the other hand, had to return to the pavilion again.

Here is a clip of the whole dramatic incident:

Elgar, however, could not make the most of the chance. He could add only 14 runs before being dismissed by Perera for 37. Coming to the game, the hosts thrashed South Africa by 199 runs to complete a 2-0 whitewash.

Chasing 490, the visitors rode on Theunis de Bruyn’s brilliant century to come up with their best batting performance on the tour. However, it was not enough as they were all out for 290. It was South Africa’s first Test whitewash since they went down against the same opposition in a two-match series almost 12 years ago.

“Right through the series we didn’t have that ability to score partnerships,” said Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis after the defeat. “I think we only had three partnerships of 50 and above the whole series.

“But once again you have to give credit to the opposition. They were able to put us under pressure for long periods of time and therefore we made a lot of mistakes,” he added.
