Such was the desperation to get wickets in the just-concluded second Test against New Zealand that Virat Kohli and his teammates resorted to some weird strategies in Christchurch. New Zealand thrashed them by seven wickets to clean sweep the two-match series.

Resuming the day on a precarious 90 for 6, India could add only 34 runs to their overnight score and were all out for 124. Trent Boult starred with the ball for the hosts, picking up four wickets while his new-ball partner Tim Southee accounted for three wickets. For India, Cheteshwar Pujara’s 24 was the top score.

In reply, New Zealand rode on fifties from openers Tom Latham and Tom Blundell to chase down the total of 132 without any trouble. Both the openers all but sealed the game for their side by adding 103 runs.

Warning for saying ‘two’:

Coming to the weird strategy from India, one of their fielders was heard shouting “two” in the fourth over of the final innings although New Zealand openers were taking just one run. Umpire Richard Kettleborough heard it and duly took the action.

He was seen having a word with India captain Virat Kohli, who tried to justify his player’s actions by trying to suggest that he was just trying to alert the fielder at fine leg of the possibility of a second run.

“No shouting two,” umpire Kettleborough told Kohli. “You shouted two there. No you’re not, you shouted here, enough please.”

Meanwhile, the series defeat was India’s first in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship and first since 2018 when they lost in England. The Virat Kohli-led side, however, continues to be on the top of the points table with 360 points. New Zealand, on the other hand, have 180 points.
