The Indian team-management would have feared the worst when Rohit Sharma failed as an opener in the warm-up game against South Africa. Opening the batting, Rohit Sharma fell for a duck as the team-management’s decision to try him out as Test opener took a blow. Well, the limited-overs vice-captain did not take long to put an end to all those apprehensions.

Rohit Sharma hit the ground running in his first Test as an opener in the ongoing game against South Africa in Vizag. He came out to open the innings alongside Mayank Agarwal after Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. As expected, the right-handed batsman took his time early on.

But as soon as he had his eyes set, he started playing his shots and executed some glorious hits. And before the end of the first session, Rohit Sharma reached his fifty too, much to the delight of the team-management and his teammates.

And as soon as Rohit reached the mark, the entire Indian dressing room stood up to give him a standing ovation. The likes of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri as well as others stood up and clapped to applaud the opener’s efforts.

At the end of the first session, India were 91 for no loss with Rohit Sharma on 52 and Agarwal on 39. Meanwhile, Kohli has made it clear that the team is not pushing Rohit to take to opening in Tests as seamlessly as he did over six years ago when pushed up to open in ODI cricket.

“Look, we’re not looking to rush him at all, you know, it’s about him finding his game accordingly because in India is it’s going to be a different practice that you follow abroad is going to be different. So opening is a slot where you have to give a player space to, you know, understand his own game. So yeah, as I said, we’re in no rush. He’ll be given space to find his own game and come into his own,” Kohli said before the game started.
