Maybe MS Dhoni, Ravi Shastri and the BCCI were right when they said the DRS is not 100% correct. Years later after all the teams accepted to allow the DRS to function in international cricket; another controversy came up, questioning its credibility. During the second T20I in Auckland, a wrong DRS call has cost a batsman his wicket. Daryl Mitchell was adjudged LBW out by the on-field umpire despite the Hotspot showing the ball had touched the bat. Meanwhile, the third umpire, Shaun Haig didn’t alter the call as well thus asking the batsman to walk towards the pavilion.

It was the last ball of the Powerplay when Krunal Pandya trapped him in front of the wickets. In the first glance, it looked out, as the on-field umpire raised his fingers too. However, when Daryl Mitchell took the DRS, the replays showed there were a deflection and a slight edge; raising questions whether its out or not. Meanwhile, the third umpire when looked closely noticed two things – there was no spike on the Snicko, but there was a mark on the Hotspot.

Referring to the relays again, he suggested the ball didn’t touch the bat, as the mark on the bat is of the pad. Without thinking twice, Haig asked the on-field umpire to stay with the decision. Obeying what the doctor ordered, the call stood, and Daryl Mitchell was declared out.

Not only the batsman but also the Kiwi skipper, Kane Williamson got stunned with the decision. As they opposed it, India captain, Rohit Sharma entered the scene. Later, the umpires again spoke on the matter and decided to stay with the final call, which was OUT. Thus, Daryl Mitchell walked back to the pavilion with the commentator, Simon Doull calling the decision as ‘ridiculous’.
