England are now just one match away from winning their first-ever World Cup. The pioneers of the game have surprisingly not laid their hands on the trophy even once. What is even more surprising  is that England made it to the World Cup final thrice but ended up losing all of them. They qualified for their first final in 1979 and lost to the mighty West Indies.

In 1987, they lost to arch-rivals Australia by seven runs. England made it to the final of the World Cup in the next edition too in 1992. However, they could not cross the finishing line against an inspired Pakistan side. In their last World Cup final, England lost to Pakistan by 22 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Derek Pringle took two early wickets for England before Imran Khan and Javed Miandad added 139 for the third wicket to steady the Pakistan innings. Pakistan finished their innings on a respectable and competitive target of 250.

In reply, England were off to a shaky start. Wasim Akram dismissed Ian Botham for a duck. The likes of Stewart, Graham Hick and Graham Gooch could not do much either as England were four down for 69. A solid partnership of 71 between Allan Lamb and Neil Fairbrother revived England’s hopes before Akram dismissed the former and Chris Lewis. England went on to lose the game by 22 runs.

And it looks like the pain of that defeat is still fresh in the minds of Ian Botham. In a shocking video, the legendary England allrounder has said that his side was robbed in the 1992 final. Ian Botham was wishing the current side for the upcoming final and said:

“We should’ve won in ’92, we were robbed.”

Here is a clip showing Ian Botham’s shocking revelation:

England, meanwhile, will take on New Zealand in the final of the ongoing World Cup. Just like England, New Zealand have also never won the World Cup.
