Should wives/girlfriends be allowed on foreign tours?; In the modern age of social media, we often find many current cricketers sharing pictures with their wives and girlfriends. However, it’s a matter of time before the posts go viral. Meanwhile, the most prominent of the cricketing couples currently are Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma. The lovebirds often share their moments of love on their social media handles. Also during their wedding, the social media went gaga on the pictures which they shared on their social media platforms.

Should Wives/Girlfriends be Allowed on Foreign Tours?

There is no doubt about the fact the couple loves being with each other. Virat Kohli can often be seen accompanied by his wife, Anushka Sharma. Ever since their wedding, Anushka accompanied Virat on most of the tours.

Recently, Virat Kohli had asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to permit players’ wives or girlfriends (WAGs) to stay with the player for the whole of an overseas tour.

However, in the earlier days, none of the players even thought of spending time with their family on tours and the family. They were only allowed on special occasions. Meanwhile, very recently, Anushka Sharma accompanied team India during their meeting with Narendra Modi. It raised many eyebrows in the social media.

None of the cricketers from the previous generations had wanted wives for a full overseas tours

The issue must get addressed seriously as none of the cricketers from the past generations was allowed to spend time with their families. It will be pretty unjust on players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and many others who got denied the chance of spending enough time with their closed ones.

Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar in his farewell speech even apologized to his kids, Arjun and Sara for not spending enough time with them on special occasions. However, with the new demand from the team India skipper Virat Kohli, things might be quite different to which it was ten years ago.

Things were different a decade back

Never did the previous cricketer ever demand of staying with their wives or children on a foreign tour. There is no doubt about the fact that Virat Kohli is perhaps the greatest batsmen of the modern generation. However, some of his demands are simply out of this world. Why will a professional cricketer who is serving for his country be allowed to spend the whole overseas tour with his family? It shouldn’t be the case especially when you are representing your country.

On a personal front, I feel the BCCI should never give the green signal to the proposal made by Virat Kohli. However, it might not work out the way I feel.  Virat Kohli is at the peak of his prowess with the bat. He has been scoring centuries across formats for fun.

Most of the wives of the Indian players can be seen cheering for their husbands from the stands. However, in a dressing room atmosphere which binds the team, the proposal made by Virat isn’t viable at least for me. So, I feel it shouldn’t be the right decision to allow wives to accompany the players on overseas tours.
