Finally, Bangladesh had something to rejoice upon during their ongoing tour of the Caribbean shores. They played some wonderful cricket in the opening One-day International at Guyana – to seal the match by 48 runs.

Experienced top-order batsman Tamim Iqbal scored a monumental 130 to power Bangladesh to a score of 278. The bowlers then responded pretty well and ended up restricting the hosts at 231 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs.

Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza bagged four wickets after conceding 37 runs to give Bangladesh a comprehensive victory in the end.

It was Mortaza, who won the toss and opted to bat. The visitors lost Anamaul Haque with just a run on the board. From there on, it was a huge partnership of 207 runs between Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan which helped the Tigers storm their way back into the game.

According to modern standards, the run-rate and the pace wasn’t quite ideal. However, on a two-paced track, it was always going to be a challenging total.

Tamim and Shakib shares 200-plus stand

Tamim played in quite brilliantly. He played some exceptional shots during his 160-ball stay. The southpaw smashed 10 fours and three gigantic sixes during his gritty knock.

On the other hand, Shakib stroked his way to 97 off 121 deliveries. He relied more on the singles and the doubles. He struck six fours during his knock. The left-hander was eventually dismissed just three runs short of a well-deserved century.

It was a quickfire knock of 30 off just 11 deliveries from wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim which pushed Bangladesh to a total of 279. He struck three fours and a couple of sixes during his whirlwind knock.

For the hosts, Devendra Bishoo was the pick of the bowlers. He scalped out a couple of wickets. Windies had a good batting line-up and would have backed them to chase the total down.

Explosive Chris Gayle found it difficult to play the big shots from the outset on a slow pitch. Gayle scored 40 off 60 deliveries before being dismissed via a run-out. Shimron Heytmer scored a fluent half-century. However, it came in 78 deliveries. He was eventually dismissed on 52.

Windies kept losing wickets at regular intervals and they eventually failed to claw their way back into the match.

Mortaza was quite brilliant with the ball and continuously bamboozled them with his variations. Bishoo and Alzarri Joseph remained unbeaten on 29 each as the hosts fell short by 48 runs.

Brief Scores:

Bangladesh 279/4 in 50 overs (Tamim Iqbal 130, Shakib Al Hasan 97, Devendra Bishoo 2/52)

Windies 231/9 in 50 overs (Shimron Heytmer 52, Chris Gayle 40, Mashrafe Mortaza 4/37)

Bangladesh won by 48 runs.
