Will MS Dhoni Play The T20 World Cup? His Childhood Coach Answers

The former skipper MS Dhoni has been on a sabbatical since India’s ouster from the ICC World Cup 2019 losing to New Zealand in the semifinal. Ever since the speculation over his retirement is on an all-time high. But his childhood coach Keshav Banerjee feels there is still a lot of cricket left in Dhoni.

The legendary cricketer has been spending some quality time away from cricket. The veteran cricketer served in the Indian army for a few days in August before moving to America to take a part in amateur golf championship.

But with another series in the fray, once again MS Dhoni’s availability is one of the hot questions among the media personnel. Reports have emerged that the selectors will not consider him irrespective of his availability. However, Keshav Banerjee, who has played an important role in shaping Dhoni’s career feels, the Ranchi born cricketer deserves this break.

“Dhoni has been playing relentlessly since 2004. So he deserves this sabbatical,” Banerjee told TOI. “Let him spend some time with his family,” he added.

Meanwhile, there are speculations that MS Dhoni might continue till the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia next year. With India yet to find a consistent performer in his absence, the management is keen to have him in the scheme of things for the big stage.

Keshav Banerjee also feels the same claiming that Dhoni might take a call after the World T20.

“I think he will play the World T20 next year, then take a call,” he continued.

Banerjee also urged the selectors to provide chances to young cricketers instead of thinking about MS Dhoni’s availability for the upcoming series. He also seemed satisfied that India now have a pool of wicket-keepers to play for the country.

“More important than Dhoni’s return is providing the young ones who have impressed in domestic cricket a chance to play for India,” said Banerjee. “We should not waste their peak by making them play only domestic matches. Bangladesh series is the ideal opportunity to test them,” he concluded.
